The Authenticity Market

Here's the modern authenticity playbook:

Go to therapy to uncover your true self. Attend workshops on vulnerability. Take the personality tests—Myers-Briggs, Enneagram, Human Design. Hire a life coach to help you live authentically. Join the men's/women's circle. Do the plant medicine ceremony. Go on the solo wilderness retreat. Journal extensively about your inner truth.

Each step costs money. Therapy: $150-300/session. Workshop: $500-2000. Personality assessments: $50-500. Life coach: $200-500/hour. Retreat: $2000-10,000. The authentic self apparently requires significant capital investment to access.

And if you question this: "You can't put a price on self-knowledge!" "Investing in yourself is the best investment!" "Your authentic self is worth it!" As if authenticity is locked behind a paywall, and people who can't afford the entry fee are just... fake?

Thesis: We've transformed authenticity from something you are into something you purchase. The "authentic self" has become expensive performance art requiring workshops, retreats, and extensive therapeutic excavation to access. This creates a class marker—those who can afford authenticity signaling versus those who just are. What Happened to Authenticity

Social media accelerates this. "Share your truth." "Be vulnerable." "Show up authentically." But you're performing authenticity for an audience. You're curating your authentic self for public consumption.

New layer of expense: Now you need not just discovery (therapy, workshops) but also curation (coaching, personal branding, storytelling courses). Your authentic self requires professional presentation.

And validation: You need other people to confirm your authenticity. Comments, likes, engagement. Your authentic self requires audience approval to feel real.

The Authenticity Tax

When authenticity becomes something you purchase, several costs emerge:

It Provides Identity Infrastructure

Modern problem: Traditional identity markers are weaker. Religion, nationality, class, gender roles—all less stable. You need to construct identity yourself.

Solution sold: Extensive identity-work. Discover yourself. Define your values. Craft your authentic brand. Build your unique identity through purchased self-discovery.

What this misses: Most people throughout history didn't do identity-work. They just lived according to their culture's expectations. Identity wasn't a project—it was a given.
